Akon Illuminates Africa

Today, 25 African countries are encumbered with an energy crisis, in which over half-a-billion people live without electricity due to its inaccessibility, unaffordability and unreliability. This exacerbates poverty as students cannot optimize studies, companies cannot optimize business, and clinics cannot optimize care. African-native and multi platinum recording artist, Akon, is at the commencement of alleviating such a calamity via The Akon Lighting Africa project.

The primary initiative is to bring clean and efficient electricity to one million African homes by the end of 2014. This is being accomplished through the installation of solar-powered street lights and residential solar systems in African villages, as well as solar equipment (i.e. solar panels) in African households.

While Akon is giving back to the community by helping his nation to overcome its' cyclical impoverished conditions, he is also continuing to fulfill his career as a music artist; talk about being cut from a different cloth! Check out his latest video, "So Blue:"
