Currently, in the cosmetic industry, testing is done on small animals such as rabbits, mice, rats, and guinea pigs. These animals are exposed to potentially irritating and deadly substances. Many times animals are forced to eat and inhale these chemicals in order to test the toxicity. After the experimentation is done, a large amount of these animals are killed. Seems to be a cruel process right? It's still going on, but California is not standing for it. California just became the first state to ban animal-tested cosmetics. With the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, violators will have to pay a base fine of $5,000 in addition to $1,000 for each day they continue their illicit activities. The act doesn't go into effect until Jan 1st, 2020, but this is a big a progressive step by the state of California.
